Tongkat ali

Tongkat ali suppliers and sourcing guide

Tongkat ali is Eurycoma longifolia, a slender tree in the Simaroubaceae family native to the forests of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, and the trade is built on its root. Roots are harvested from wild or plantation trees, dried, chipped and either milled or extracted, usually in hot water. Extracts are sold by extract ratio or standardized to eurycomanone, glycosaponins or polypeptides, and branded extracts differ in method and markers.

Forms and grades of tongkat ali

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Root powder

Dried, milled root with nothing removed or concentrated, sold by mesh size and usually not standardized.

  • Ratio extract

Hot-water root extract sold by drug-to-extract ratio such as 100:1 or 200:1, with no guaranteed marker level; the ratio alone does not show what the extract contains.

  • Standardized extract

Water extract sold with a minimum eurycomanone, glycosaponin or polypeptide content by a named HPLC or other method.

  • Plantation-grown material

Root from cultivated trees with documented origin and age, offered as an alternative to wild-harvested root.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Identity (HPTLC or HPLC fingerprint)
Fingerprint against a reference standard to confirm Eurycoma longifolia root, since adulteration with other roots is a known problem.
Eurycomanone assay (HPLC)
Eurycomanone and any other declared markers by a named HPLC method, with the method stated on the COA.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus.
Adulterant screen
Screen for undeclared synthetic drugs, often by LC-MS/MS, which some buyers require for this ingredient because of past adulteration findings.
Physical tests
Loss on drying, particle size, bulk density, extract ratio and any carrier such as maltodextrin.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep powders and extracts sealed in lined fiber drums or foil bags in a cool, dry place away from light. Dry extracts are hygroscopic and cake once exposed to humid air, so reseal opened containers promptly. Shelf life or a retest date comes from the supplier's specification, and the marker assay is usually repeated at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

Marker levels vary with root age, origin and extraction, so record the eurycomanone result, extract ratio and carrier for each lot. Keep the supplier lot and origin traceable to finished batches and retain samples for adulterant retesting.

Regulatory status
