Sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract)

Sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract) suppliers and sourcing guide

Sulforaphane is an isothiocyanate formed when glucoraphanin, a glucosinolate concentrated in broccoli seeds and young sprouts, is broken down by the plant enzyme myrosinase. Free sulforaphane is unstable, so most ingredients are dried broccoli seed or sprout extracts standardized to glucoraphanin, sometimes with active myrosinase kept intact. Stabilized sulforaphane, for example complexed with cyclodextrin, is also sold and is specified by sulforaphane content.

Forms and grades of sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract)

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Glucoraphanin-standardized seed extract

Broccoli seed extract with a stated glucoraphanin percentage; most such extracts have little or no active myrosinase.

  • Myrosinase-active sprout or seed powder

Gently dried material, or extract plus added broccoli myrosinase, designed to form sulforaphane when mixed with water.

  • Stabilized sulforaphane

Sulforaphane complexed with cyclodextrin or similar carriers, specified by sulforaphane content.

  • Whole broccoli sprout powder

Freeze-dried or air-dried sprouts, with lower and more variable glucoraphanin.

  • Organic

Extracts and sprout powders from certified organic seed or sprouts.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Glucoraphanin assay (HPLC)
Glucoraphanin content by HPLC, the main specification for seed extracts.
Sulforaphane or conversion test
Sulforaphane by HPLC for stabilized grades, or sulforaphane formed after hydration for myrosinase-active grades, which shows the enzyme is still working.
Moisture
Loss on drying; moisture speeds loss of enzyme activity and caking.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella; sprouts are a known pathogen risk, so check results and kill steps closely.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue screen by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the supplier specification and the buyer's own limits.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed, cool and dry; heat and moisture reduce myrosinase activity and sulforaphane content. Stabilized sulforaphane and active sprout powders may need refrigeration, so follow the supplier's storage statement. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier, with glucoraphanin or sulforaphane assay repeated at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

Record glucoraphanin or sulforaphane content and, for active grades, the conversion result for each lot. Store and use older active lots first, and recheck conversion on aged stock before use.

Regulatory status

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract) can brands buy?

Common forms include glucoraphanin-standardized seed extract, myrosinase-active sprout or seed powder, stabilized sulforaphane, whole broccoli sprout powder and organic. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract) include?

Expect glucoraphanin assay (HPLC), sulforaphane or conversion test, moisture, microbiology, pesticide residues and heavy metals, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract) be stored?

Store sealed, cool and dry; heat and moisture reduce myrosinase activity and sulforaphane content. Stabilized sulforaphane and active sprout powders may need refrigeration, so follow the supplier's storage statement. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier, with glucoraphanin or sulforaphane assay repeated at retest.

What is the regulatory status of sulforaphane (broccoli sprout extract)?

Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists sulforaphane (common name R-sulforaphane) as an isolate, with broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) flower, seed, sprout and whole plant as source materials. The database also lists glucoraphanin (sulforaphane glucosinolate, CAS 21414-41-5) as an isolate from broccoli flower, seed and sprout.
