Rutin

Rutin suppliers and sourcing guide

Rutin is a flavonol glycoside, quercetin bound to the disaccharide rutinose. Commercial rutin is extracted mainly from the flower buds of the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica) and from the fruit of the Brazilian fava d'anta tree (Dimorphandra species), with buckwheat as a smaller source; it is purified by hot-water or alcohol extraction and recrystallization. It is sold as a pale yellow to greenish-yellow powder, usually as rutin trihydrate.

Forms and grades of rutin

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Rutin trihydrate (NF grade)

The standard crystalline form, sold at 95% or higher purity against a pharmacopeial or supplier specification.

  • Anhydrous rutin

Rutin with crystal water removed, used where a higher rutin content per gram is wanted.

  • Enzymatically modified rutin

Glucosylated rutin made by enzyme treatment, which dissolves readily in water for drinks.

  • Source-declared grades

Rutin specified by source (Sophora japonica, fava d'anta or buckwheat), which some buyers require for allergen or labeling reasons.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Assay
Rutin content by HPLC or UV spectrophotometry, stated on an anhydrous or as-is basis.
Water
Water by Karl Fischer or loss on drying; the trihydrate carries roughly 7–9% water.
Quercetin and related flavonoids
Free quercetin and other flavonoids by HPLC, which indicate breakdown or incomplete purification.
Identity
HPLC retention time, UV or IR compared with a reference standard.
Heavy metals and residual solvents
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, plus solvents against USP <467>.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogens.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep rutin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place; it darkens on prolonged light exposure. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with assay, water and appearance checked at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

Record the assay basis and water content for each lot so hydrated and anhydrous lots are dosed correctly. Note the botanical source on lot records if it is on your specification.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

  • Health Canada's rutin monograph for natural health products lists quercetin-3-rutinoside, rutin and rutoside as names, with citrus bioflavonoids, rutin and rutoside trihydrate as source ingredients.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of rutin can brands buy?

Common forms include rutin trihydrate (NF grade), anhydrous rutin, enzymatically modified rutin and source-declared grades. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for rutin include?

Expect assay, water, quercetin and related flavonoids, identity, heavy metals and residual solvents and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should rutin be stored?

Keep rutin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place; it darkens on prolonged light exposure. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with assay, water and appearance checked at retest.

What is the regulatory status of rutin?

Health Canada's rutin monograph for natural health products lists quercetin-3-rutinoside, rutin and rutoside as names, with citrus bioflavonoids, rutin and rutoside trihydrate as source ingredients.
