Diosmin

Diosmin suppliers and sourcing guide

Diosmin is a flavone glycoside, diosmetin bound to rutinose. It occurs in small amounts in citrus, but commercial diosmin is made semi-synthetically by extracting hesperidin from citrus peel and then oxidizing (dehydrogenating) it to diosmin, followed by purification. It is sold as a grayish-yellow to light yellow powder, often micronized, either as diosmin of 90% or more or as a fixed mixture with other citrus flavonoids such as hesperidin.

Forms and grades of diosmin

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Diosmin (pharmacopeial grade)

Diosmin of 90% or higher purity, often sold against the European Pharmacopoeia monograph.

  • Micronized diosmin

Diosmin milled to a small, controlled particle size; the particle size specification is part of what is being bought.

  • Diosmin with hesperidin

Fixed blends, commonly about 90% diosmin with 10% other flavonoids expressed as hesperidin.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Assay (HPLC)
Diosmin content by HPLC on an anhydrous basis, following the pharmacopeial method where one is cited.
Related substances
Hesperidin, isorhoifolin, linarin, diosmetin and other flavonoids by HPLC, each against a limit.
Residual iodine
Where iodine is used in the conversion from hesperidin, residual iodine against the specification limit.
Particle size
Particle size distribution by laser diffraction for micronized grades.
Water and heavy metals
Water by Karl Fischer, and lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
Microbiology and residual solvents
Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogens, plus solvents such as pyridine or alcohols used in processing, against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep diosmin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Micronized powder is dusty and can cake, so keep containers closed and handle with dust control. Shelf life and retest are set by the supplier's specification.

Lots and expiry dates

Record assay, the related-substance profile and particle size for each lot; for blends, record the diosmin and hesperidin percentages separately. Particle size can differ between lots and affects blending and capsule fill.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

  • Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database classifies diosmin as a natural health product under Schedule 1, item 2 (an isolate), with Citrus aurantium fruit and Citrus sinensis fruit peel as source materials.

  • FDA's list of reviewed 75-day premarket notifications for new dietary ingredients includes NDIN 1413, diosmin / micronized diosmin, from Bordas S.A.; the list does not state the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of diosmin can brands buy?

Common forms include diosmin (pharmacopeial grade), micronized diosmin and diosmin with hesperidin. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for diosmin include?

Expect assay (HPLC), related substances, residual iodine, particle size, water and heavy metals and microbiology and residual solvents, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should diosmin be stored?

Keep diosmin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Micronized powder is dusty and can cake, so keep containers closed and handle with dust control. Shelf life and retest are set by the supplier's specification.
