SAMe
SAMe suppliers and sourcing guide
SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) is a compound formed from the amino acid methionine and adenosine triphosphate. Commercial SAMe is made by yeast fermentation (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) fed with methionine, then extracted and purified. Because the free molecule is unstable, it is sold as a stabilized salt, most often SAMe tosylate disulfate or SAMe butanedisulfonate, and labels usually state the SAMe ion content.

Forms and grades of same
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
SAMe tosylate disulfate
The most common stabilized salt, roughly half SAMe ion by weight; check the stated ion content.
SAMe butanedisulfonate
An alternative stabilized salt with a different ion content per gram.
SAMe phytate
A newer salt form offered by a few suppliers.
Enteric-coated tablet cores
Pre-made cores or granules designed for enteric coating, since SAMe is sensitive to moisture and acid.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- SAMe assay (HPLC)
- SAMe ion content by HPLC, reported per gram of salt, plus the active (S,S) isomer share.
- Degradation products
- S-adenosylhomocysteine, methylthioadenosine and adenine by HPLC, which rise as SAMe breaks down.
- Water content (Karl Fischer)
- Moisture, a key stability parameter for this hygroscopic salt.
- Counter-ion content
- Sulfate and tosylate (or butanedisulfonate) content to confirm the salt form.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the supplier specification and the buyer's own limits.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or E. coli, and Salmonella, against the supplier specification.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
SAMe salts are hygroscopic and break down with heat and moisture, so suppliers specify cold storage (often refrigerated) in sealed containers with desiccant. Open containers only in low-humidity rooms and use quickly. Shelf life and retest come from the supplier's specification, with assay and degradation products repeated at retest.
Lots and expiry dates
Record SAMe ion content, isomer share and water for each lot and calculate label amounts from the ion, not the salt weight. Rotate strictly first-expiry-first-out and keep cold-chain records for each shipment.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that SAMe is sold in the United States as a dietary supplement and is called ademetionine in Europe.

What forms of same can brands buy?
Common forms include sAMe tosylate disulfate, sAMe butanedisulfonate, sAMe phytate and enteric-coated tablet cores. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for same include?
Expect sAMe assay (HPLC), degradation products, water content (Karl Fischer), counter-ion content, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should same be stored?
SAMe salts are hygroscopic and break down with heat and moisture, so suppliers specify cold storage (often refrigerated) in sealed containers with desiccant. Open containers only in low-humidity rooms and use quickly. Shelf life and retest come from the supplier's specification, with assay and degradation products repeated at retest.
