Salidroside
Salidroside suppliers and sourcing guide
Salidroside is a phenylethanoid glycoside, the glucoside of tyrosol, found in the roots and rhizomes of Rhodiola species. It reaches buyers in two ways: as a marker compound in Rhodiola rosea root extracts, which are usually standardized to salidroside and rosavins, and as high-purity salidroside made by extraction and chromatography from Rhodiola species or by fermentation or enzymatic synthesis from tyrosol. Both are sold as white to brown powders.

Forms and grades of salidroside
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Rhodiola rosea extract
Root and rhizome extract standardized to a stated salidroside percentage, often with rosavins, which identify Rhodiola rosea.
High-purity salidroside
Grades of 98% or more from purification or synthesis, used where salidroside is the labeled ingredient.
Other Rhodiola species
Extracts from Rhodiola crenulata or other species, which contain salidroside but little or no rosavin and are not the same as Rhodiola rosea extract.
Organic or ethanol-only extracts
Extracts made from organic root or with water and ethanol only.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Salidroside assay
- Salidroside by HPLC-UV against a reference standard.
- Rosavins and species identity
- Rosavin, rosarin and rosin by HPLC, plus HPTLC fingerprint, to confirm Rhodiola rosea and catch substitution with other species or added synthetic salidroside.
- Residual solvents
- Ethanol, methanol or other solvents by headspace GC.
- Heavy metals and pesticides
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, and a pesticide residue screen for root material.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, and absence of Salmonella and E. coli.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep salidroside and Rhodiola extracts sealed in a cool, dry place away from light; extracts are hygroscopic and can cake. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of salidroside and rosavins for older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record salidroside and rosavin results and the stated species for each lot. A high salidroside value with low rosavins in a product sold as Rhodiola rosea extract is a sign to ask the supplier about species or added salidroside.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Rhodiola rosea natural health product monograph lists the root and rhizome as the source material and includes standardized dry extracts with 0.8-3% salidroside and/or 1-6% rosavins as a method of preparation.

What forms of salidroside can brands buy?
Common forms include rhodiola rosea extract, high-purity salidroside, other Rhodiola species and organic or ethanol-only extracts. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for salidroside include?
Expect salidroside assay, rosavins and species identity, residual solvents, heavy metals and pesticides and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should salidroside be stored?
Keep salidroside and Rhodiola extracts sealed in a cool, dry place away from light; extracts are hygroscopic and can cake. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of salidroside and rosavins for older stock.
