Pterostilbene

Pterostilbene suppliers and sourcing guide

Pterostilbene is a stilbene closely related to resveratrol, with two of resveratrol's hydroxyl groups replaced by methoxy groups. It occurs in blueberries, grapes and the heartwood of Indian kino (Pterocarpus marsupium). Most commercial pterostilbene is nature-identical trans-pterostilbene made by chemical synthesis and purified to a white to off-white powder, with botanical extracts available in smaller volumes.

Forms and grades of pterostilbene

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Synthetic trans-pterostilbene

High-purity (often 98% or more) nature-identical material, the most common grade for capsules.

  • Pterocarpus marsupium extract

Heartwood extract standardized to pterostilbene, for buyers who want a botanical source.

  • Dispersible and co-crystal forms

Pterostilbene combined with carriers or co-formers to change solubility or flow, at a lower pterostilbene percentage.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Assay (HPLC)
trans-Pterostilbene content by HPLC against a reference standard.
cis-Isomer and related substances
cis-Pterostilbene and synthesis impurities by HPLC; light exposure converts trans to cis.
Identity
HPLC retention time, IR or melting point compared with a reference standard.
Residual solvents
Solvents from synthesis or extraction against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
Microbiology and loss on drying
Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogens, plus moisture.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep pterostilbene sealed in opaque containers in a cool, dry place, since light converts the trans form to cis. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's specification, with trans-pterostilbene assay checked at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

Record trans- and cis-pterostilbene for each lot, and note whether material is synthetic or plant-derived if the label says so. Retest lots that have been stored in light or warm conditions.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Pterostilbene suppliers

Manufacturers and distributors whose own websites say they sell it.

  • Blue California

Manufacturer · Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

California ingredient company that makes nature-identical specialty nutrients by fermentation and bioconversion, including ergothioneine, L-theanine, hydroxytyrosol, pterostilbene and vitamin K2.

Suppliers are in alphabetical order and none pays to appear. Each claim is checked against the supplier’s own website on the date shown. Ask for the specification sheet and a recent COA before you order, and confirm details with the supplier.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of pterostilbene can brands buy?

Common forms include synthetic trans-pterostilbene, pterocarpus marsupium extract and dispersible and co-crystal forms. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for pterostilbene include?

Expect assay (HPLC), cis-Isomer and related substances, identity, residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology and loss on drying, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should pterostilbene be stored?

Keep pterostilbene sealed in opaque containers in a cool, dry place, since light converts the trans form to cis. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's specification, with trans-pterostilbene assay checked at retest.

What is the regulatory status of pterostilbene?

A Health Canada natural health product monograph lists pterostilbene from the stem heartwood of Pterocarpus marsupium and synthetic pterostilbene as medicinal ingredients.
