Pygeum

Pygeum suppliers and sourcing guide

Pygeum is the bark of Prunus africana, an evergreen tree of the mountain forests of central and southern Africa and Madagascar. Bark is stripped from wild or managed trees, dried and extracted, usually with lipophilic solvents, to give extracts standardized to phytosterols (beta-sitosterol) and other lipid markers. Trade in the bark is controlled under international wildlife trade rules, so supply is limited and documented.

Forms and grades of pygeum

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Bark powder

Dried, milled stem or trunk bark, not standardized.

  • Standardized lipophilic extract

Extract standardized to total phytosterols (commonly 12% to 14%), the usual supplement form.

  • Softgel-ready oil extract

Extract supplied in an oil for softgel filling, with the carrier stated.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Identity (HPTLC)
Fingerprint against a Prunus africana bark reference.
Phytosterol assay (GC)
Total phytosterols, mainly beta-sitosterol, by GC or HPLC against the spec.
Residual solvents
For extracts made with ethanol or other solvents, residual solvent levels against USP <467> or the buyer's spec.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, usually by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and Prop 65 exposure targets where relevant.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella. Raw herb powders carry more microbial load than extracts and may be steam treated, which should be stated on the COA.
Physical tests
Appearance, loss on drying and, for oil extracts, peroxide value.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep pygeum extract sealed, cool and protected from light and air; lipophilic extracts can oxidize, so oil forms are best kept nitrogen flushed. Bark powder should be kept dry. Shelf life or retest date comes from the supplier's spec, with the phytosterol assay repeated at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

Phytosterol content varies with harvest site and extraction, and supply is tied to permitted harvest volumes, so check each lot's assay and keep the supplier's origin and trade permit documents with the lot. Record the supplier lot and retest date.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of pygeum can brands buy?

Common forms include bark powder, standardized lipophilic extract and softgel-ready oil extract. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for pygeum include?

Expect identity (HPTLC), phytosterol assay (GC), residual solvents, heavy metals, microbiology and physical tests, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should pygeum be stored?

Keep pygeum extract sealed, cool and protected from light and air; lipophilic extracts can oxidize, so oil forms are best kept nitrogen flushed. Bark powder should be kept dry. Shelf life or retest date comes from the supplier's spec, with the phytosterol assay repeated at retest.

What is the regulatory status of pygeum?

Health Canada's Pygeum natural health product monograph lists Prunus africana with dried stem bark and trunk bark as the source parts. The same monograph covers extracts standardized to 12-14% phytosterols.
