Pomegranate extract
Pomegranate extract suppliers and sourcing guide
Pomegranate extract comes from Punica granatum, a shrub or small tree native to Iran and northern India and grown across the Mediterranean, India and California. Extracts are made from the whole fruit, the husk (pericarp) or the seed by water or water-alcohol extraction, then concentrated and dried. Most are standardized to ellagic acid or punicalagins by HPLC, and the plant part and marker define the grade.

Forms and grades of pomegranate extract
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Punicalagin-standardized extract
Husk or whole-fruit extract with a declared punicalagin percentage by HPLC, often 20 to 40 percent.
Ellagic acid-standardized extract
Extract sold with a minimum ellagic acid percentage, commonly 40 percent. Ellagic acid grades may be partly hydrolyzed, so they are not interchangeable with punicalagin grades.
Juice powder
Spray-dried juice concentrate with a carrier, used in drinks and gummies.
Seed oil
Cold-pressed or extracted seed oil sold for its punicic acid content; a separate ingredient from fruit extracts.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity (HPTLC)
- Fingerprint against Punica granatum reference material, with the plant part stated.
- Marker assay (HPLC)
- Punicalagins A and B and/or ellagic acid by a named HPLC method. Results from different methods are not comparable.
- Residual solvents
- For ethanol extracts, results against USP <467> or the buyer's spec.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella (often Staphylococcus aureus too).
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep extract sealed in lined drums away from heat, light and humidity; it is hygroscopic and cakes once opened. Store seed oil sealed under nitrogen and cool because it oxidizes. Suppliers assign shelf life or retest dates, and the marker assay is repeated before use past retest.
Lots and expiry dates
Punicalagin and ellagic acid levels vary with plant part, harvest and process, so check each lot's assay against your spec. Record supplier lot, plant part and marker, and use lots first-expiry-first-out.
