Phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid with serine on its phosphate head group. Commercial PS is made by treating soy or sunflower lecithin with the enzyme phospholipase D in the presence of L-serine, which swaps the choline head group of phosphatidylcholine for serine; the product is then purified and dried. It is sold as powder or as a liquid in oil at a declared PS percentage, commonly 20% to 70%.
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Made from soy lecithin; the most common grade, needs a soy allergen statement and often a non-GMO declaration.
Made from sunflower lecithin for soy-free products.
PS on a carrier such as silica or another excipient, sold by percentage (for example 20%, 50% or 70%) for capsules and tablets.
PS in an oil base for softgels.
PS with marine fatty acids, made from fish or krill phospholipids; a smaller, specialty market.
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
Store sealed under nitrogen or with minimal headspace, cool and away from light, since phospholipids oxidize and powders absorb moisture. Many suppliers specify refrigerated or below 25 °C storage. Shelf life and retest are set by the supplier, with PS assay and peroxide value repeated at retest.
PS content and the share of other phospholipids vary by lot, so dose from the actual COA assay and record it with the lot. Track the source (soy, sunflower or marine) for allergen labeling and rotate first-expiry-first-out because oxidation increases with time.

Health Canada's Phosphatidylserine monograph lists phosphatidylserine sourced from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed isolate and from phosphatidylserine-enriched soy lecithin.

Suppliers are in alphabetical order and none pays to appear. Each claim is checked against the supplier’s own website on the date shown. Ask for the specification sheet and a recent COA before you order, and confirm details with the supplier.
Common forms include soy-derived PS, sunflower-derived PS, powder grades, liquid or oil-dispersed PS and fish or krill-derived PS. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
Expect pS assay (HPLC or 31P-NMR), source and GMO status, peroxide value, moisture and residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
