Olive leaf extract

Olive leaf extract suppliers and sourcing guide

Olive leaf extract is made from the leaves of Olea europaea, collected mainly in Spain, Italy, Greece and Tunisia during pruning and harvest. Dried leaves are extracted with water or water-ethanol and dried to a bitter powder standardized to oleuropein. Dried leaf for tea and leaf powder are also sold; hydroxytyrosol extracts are usually made from olive fruit or olive mill water rather than leaf.

Forms and grades of olive leaf extract

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Oleuropein-standardized extract

Dry leaf extract sold at a stated oleuropein percentage (commonly 20 to 40%) by HPLC.

  • Leaf powder

    Dried, milled leaf; not standardized.

  • Cut leaf

Dried, cut leaf for tea and infusions.

  • Liquid extract

Fresh or dried leaf extract in water, glycerin or ethanol, sold on oleuropein or polyphenols.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Oleuropein (HPLC)
Oleuropein by a named HPLC method, sometimes with hydroxytyrosol and total polyphenols.
Identity (HPTLC or HPLC fingerprint)
Confirms olive leaf and the expected secoiridoid pattern.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue screen; olive groves are sprayed, and leaf carries residues.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella.
Residual solvents
Ethanol for hydroalcoholic extracts against USP <467>.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep the extract sealed, cool, dry and out of light; oleuropein degrades with moisture and heat. Reseal opened containers. Shelf life or retest date comes from the supplier.

Lots and expiry dates

Oleuropein depends on leaf age, cultivar, season and how quickly leaves were dried. Record origin, assay method and supplier lot, and check pesticide results each lot.
