Oat straw
Oat straw suppliers and sourcing guide
Oat straw in the herb trade is the green aerial parts of the oat plant, Avena sativa, cut while the plant is still green and before or around the milky-grain stage, then dried. It is sold cut for teas, milled to powder, or extracted with water or water-ethanol into tinctures and dry extracts. It is a different material from the dry, mature straw left after grain harvest and from oat grass, the young shoots of the plant.

What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity
- Macroscopy, microscopy and an HPTLC fingerprint confirming Avena sativa aerial parts and green, not mature, straw.
- Moisture and foreign matter
- Loss on drying plus grain, weed seed and soil content, which reflect harvest practice.
- Gluten
- Gluten by ELISA if a gluten-free claim is planned, since oats are often grown near and handled with wheat and barley.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
- Microbiology and mycotoxins
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli, Salmonella, and a mycotoxin screen for cereal crops.
- Pesticide residues
- Multi-residue screen including glyphosate, which is sometimes used on cereal crops.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep cut straw, powder and extracts sealed in lined bags or drums in a cool, dry, dark area off the floor, since moisture and warmth invite mold and caking and light fades color and aroma. Reseal opened containers promptly. Shelf life or a retest date is set by the supplier's specification, and identity, moisture and microbiology are usually repeated before using aged stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Green color, leaf content and moisture vary with cutting stage and drying, so record harvest date, origin and color grade for each lot. Track gluten results by lot if any finished product carries a gluten-free claim.
