Noni

Noni suppliers and sourcing guide

Noni is the fruit of Morinda citrifolia, a small tree in the coffee family (Rubiaceae) grown in Polynesia, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. The ripe fruit is pressed into juice, often after a period of natural fermentation, and the juice is pasteurized, sold as puree, or spray-dried into powder. Brands buy noni juice or puree for drinks and noni fruit powder for capsules and blends.

Forms and grades of noni

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Juice or puree

Pasteurized single-strength juice or puree, sold aseptic or frozen. Some suppliers age the fruit before pressing, so the process belongs on the spec.

  • Spray-dried juice powder

Juice dried on a carrier such as maltodextrin for capsules and powder blends.

  • Whole fruit powder

Sliced fruit dried and milled, including seed and skin unless the spec says otherwise.

  • Organic

Juice or powder from certified organic fruit, with the organic certificate tied to the lot.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Identity
HPLC or HPTLC fingerprint against Morinda citrifolia reference material, often including scopoletin as a marker.
Juice parameters
Brix, pH and titratable acidity for juice and puree; loss on drying for powders.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella (often Staphylococcus aureus too). Juice is also checked for commercial sterility or by its pasteurization records.
Physical tests
Loss on drying, mesh or particle size, bulk density, color and odor against the spec. For powder, state the carrier and its percentage.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep aseptic juice and puree sealed and cool, and refrigerate or freeze once opened; frozen puree stays frozen until use. Powder goes in sealed, lined containers away from heat and humidity because it is hygroscopic. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's spec and stability data.

Lots and expiry dates

Flavor, color and solids vary with fruit ripeness, origin and how long fruit is held before pressing. Record supplier lot, Brix or moisture and process notes, and rotate stock first-expiry-first-out.
