Garcinia cambogia
Garcinia cambogia suppliers and sourcing guide
Garcinia cambogia (now Garcinia gummi-gutta) is a tree of southern India and Southeast Asia whose sour fruit rind is dried and used in cooking. For supplements, the dried rind is extracted with water and the hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is usually supplied as a calcium, potassium or mixed calcium-potassium salt, standardized to 50% to 60% HCA. Free HCA tends to convert to its lactone, so the salt form and lactone content matter.

Forms and grades of garcinia cambogia
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Dried fruit rind
Sun- or smoke-dried rind used as a souring agent and as extraction raw material.
Calcium HCA extract
Rind extract as calcium hydroxycitrate, commonly standardized to 50% to 60% HCA.
Potassium or calcium-potassium HCA
More water-soluble salt forms for drinks and powders.
Rind powder
Milled dried rind, not standardized.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- HCA assay (HPLC)
- Total hydroxycitric acid and HCA lactone by HPLC, or by titration in older specs; the method and whether lactone is included should be stated.
- Mineral content
- Calcium and potassium by ICP-OES or titration to confirm the salt form.
- Identity
- HPLC or HPTLC fingerprint to confirm Garcinia rind origin.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, usually by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and Prop 65 exposure targets where relevant.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella. Raw herb powders carry more microbial load than extracts and may be steam treated, which should be stated on the COA.
- Loss on drying
- Moisture against the spec; salts can pick up water.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep garcinia extract sealed in lined drums in a cool, dry place; HCA salts are hygroscopic and cake once they absorb moisture. Reseal opened containers promptly. Shelf life or retest date follows the supplier's spec, with HCA and lactone rechecked at retest.
Lots and expiry dates
HCA content, salt ratio and lactone level vary by lot and process, so check each COA against the spec. Record the supplier lot, salt form, HCA result and retest date.
