Eleuthero

Eleuthero suppliers and sourcing guide

Eleuthero is the root and rhizome of Eleutherococcus senticosus, a thorny shrub of northeastern China, the Russian Far East and Korea; despite the old name Siberian ginseng, it is not a Panax species. The dried root is sold cut or powdered, or extracted with water or ethanol and standardized to eleutherosides B and E by HPLC.

Forms and grades of eleuthero

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Cut root

Dried root and rhizome for tea and tincture.

  • Root powder

    Milled root, not standardized.

  • Standardized extract

Water or ethanol extract standardized to eleutherosides B and E (often 0.8% or more combined) by HPLC.

  • Liquid extract

Tincture or fluid extract sold by root-to-solvent ratio.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Identity (HPTLC)
Fingerprint against an Eleutherococcus senticosus reference, including a check for Periploca sepium, a known substitute.
Eleutheroside assay (HPLC)
Eleutherosides B and E by a named HPLC method.
Residual solvents
For extracts made with ethanol or other solvents, residual solvent levels against USP <467> or the buyer's spec.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, usually by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and Prop 65 exposure targets where relevant.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella. Raw herb powders carry more microbial load than extracts and may be steam treated, which should be stated on the COA.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue screen, required for organic claims and commonly requested for conventional material.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep dried herb and powdered extracts sealed in lined drums or bags, away from heat, light and humidity. Dry extracts are hygroscopic and cake once exposed to air, so reseal opened containers promptly. Suppliers assign a shelf life or retest date, and the marker assay is usually repeated at retest before material is used past it.

Lots and expiry dates

Eleutheroside content varies with root age, origin and wild versus cultivated supply, so check every lot against the spec. Record the supplier lot, origin, plant part and retest date.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of eleuthero can brands buy?

Common forms include cut root, root powder, standardized extract and liquid extract. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for eleuthero include?

Expect identity (HPTLC), eleutheroside assay (HPLC), residual solvents, heavy metals, microbiology and pesticide residues, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should eleuthero be stored?

Keep dried herb and powdered extracts sealed in lined drums or bags, away from heat, light and humidity. Dry extracts are hygroscopic and cake once exposed to air, so reseal opened containers promptly. Suppliers assign a shelf life or retest date, and the marker assay is usually repeated at retest before material is used past it.

What is the regulatory status of eleuthero?

Health Canada's Eleuthero natural health product monograph lists Eleutherococcus senticosus with dried root, or root and rhizome, as the source part. The EU Novel Food status Catalogue entry for Acanthopanax senticosus (POL-NF-00074) concerns only the roots and lists them as not novel in food supplements.
