Elastin peptides
Elastin peptides suppliers and sourcing guide
Elastin peptides are short protein fragments made by hydrolyzing elastin, the insoluble structural protein of arteries, ligaments and skin. Elastin is isolated from fish tissue (such as bonito or skipjack tuna heart bulbus arteriosus and fish skin), bovine neck ligament or porcine aorta, then broken down with enzymes or acid, filtered and spray-dried. The result is a white to pale yellow powder rich in glycine, proline, alanine and valine, with the cross-linking amino acids desmosine and isodesmosine as markers.

Forms and grades of elastin peptides
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Fish elastin peptide
Hydrolysate from fish bulbus arteriosus or skin, the most common supplement form, sold as powder.
Bovine or porcine elastin hydrolysate
Hydrolysate from bovine ligament or porcine aorta, with source documentation needed for halal, kosher and BSE paperwork.
Cosmetic solutions
Hydrolyzed elastin as an aqueous solution with preservatives, sold for topical formulas.
Blends
Elastin peptides pre-mixed with collagen peptides or hyaluronic acid for powders and drinks.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity markers
- Desmosine and isodesmosine by LC-MS or HPLC, and an amino acid profile, which distinguish elastin hydrolysate from collagen or other proteins.
- Molecular weight distribution
- Peptide size by size-exclusion HPLC, stated as average molecular weight or as a share below a cutoff.
- Protein, moisture and ash
- Protein by Kjeldahl, loss on drying and ash; high ash points to salt left from hydrolysis.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, with mercury watched closely for fish-derived material.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms, and absence of Salmonella and E. coli.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep elastin peptide powder sealed in a cool, dry place; it is hygroscopic and can cake or brown if it absorbs moisture. Liquid cosmetic grades should be kept closed at the temperature on the supplier's spec. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest for older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the animal source, molecular weight result and marker results for each lot. Keep species and origin certificates with the lot, since fish allergen and animal-source labeling depend on them.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists hydrolyzed elastin (CAS 100085-10-7) as an extract under Schedule 1, item 2 of the Natural Health Products Regulations, with source materials that include cod skin, chicken egg shell membrane and skipjack tuna bulbus arteriosus.

What forms of elastin peptides can brands buy?
Common forms include fish elastin peptide, bovine or porcine elastin hydrolysate, cosmetic solutions and blends. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for elastin peptides include?
Expect identity markers, molecular weight distribution, protein, moisture and ash, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should elastin peptides be stored?
Keep elastin peptide powder sealed in a cool, dry place; it is hygroscopic and can cake or brown if it absorbs moisture. Liquid cosmetic grades should be kept closed at the temperature on the supplier's spec. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest for older stock.
