D-mannose
D-mannose suppliers and sourcing guide
D-mannose is a six-carbon sugar, the 2-epimer of glucose, found in small amounts in fruits such as cranberries and as a building block of plant polysaccharides called mannans. Commercial D-mannose is made by hydrolyzing mannan-rich materials such as hardwood hemicellulose, or by enzymatic conversion of other sugars such as fructose, then purified and crystallized. Brands buy it as a white crystalline powder, sometimes in blends with cranberry extract.

Forms and grades of d-mannose
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Crystalline powder
Standard white powder for capsules and drink powders.
Granular grades
Coarser particles for tableting and better flow.
Wood-derived or corn-free grades
D-mannose made from hardwood rather than corn-based sugars, for buyers who need to avoid corn.
Blends
D-mannose pre-blended with cranberry extract or other ingredients by the supplier.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Assay (HPLC)
- D-mannose purity on a dry basis by HPLC, with other sugars such as glucose and fructose reported.
- Specific rotation
- Optical rotation to confirm the D-form.
- Loss on drying
- Moisture; D-mannose picks up water and can cake.
- Particle size
- Sieve analysis, which affects flow and dissolution.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the supplier specification and the buyer's own limits.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or E. coli, and Salmonella, against the supplier specification.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store sealed in a cool, dry place off the floor; D-mannose absorbs moisture and can cake. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier's specification, with assay and loss on drying repeated at retest.
Lots and expiry dates
Record assay, moisture and feedstock (wood, corn or other) for each lot. Check for caking at receipt and rotate first-expiry-first-out.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists D-mannose as an isolate, with an oral non-medicinal purpose as a sweetening agent and a topical purpose as a humectant at up to 5%.

What forms of d-mannose can brands buy?
Common forms include crystalline powder, granular grades, wood-derived or corn-free grades and blends. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for d-mannose include?
Expect assay (HPLC), specific rotation, loss on drying, particle size, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should d-mannose be stored?
Store sealed in a cool, dry place off the floor; D-mannose absorbs moisture and can cake. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier's specification, with assay and loss on drying repeated at retest.
