Collagen tripeptide
Collagen tripeptide suppliers and sourcing guide
Collagen tripeptide is a hydrolyzed collagen made so that a large share of it is tripeptides with the sequence glycine-X-Y, especially glycine-proline-hydroxyproline (Gly-Pro-Hyp). It is made from gelatin or collagen from fish scales or skin, or from pig skin, using a collagenase-type enzyme that cuts collagen into tripeptides, followed by filtration, decolorizing and spray-drying. It is a white, nearly odorless powder that dissolves readily, used in drinks, powders and tablets.

Forms and grades of collagen tripeptide
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Fish-derived
Tripeptide made from fish scale or skin collagen, the most common form, which requires a fish allergen declaration in many markets.
Porcine-derived
Tripeptide made from pig skin gelatin, used where fish is not wanted but pork is acceptable.
Standardized tripeptide content
Grades with a stated share of tripeptides or of Gly-Pro-Hyp, which is what separates them from ordinary collagen peptides.
Agglomerated or granular
Powder agglomerated for fast cold-water dispersion in stick packs and drink mixes.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Tripeptide and Gly-Pro-Hyp content
- Tripeptide share and Gly-Pro-Hyp by LC-MS or HPLC; this is the key test that justifies the tripeptide label.
- Molecular weight distribution
- Size-exclusion HPLC showing average molecular weight and the low-molecular-weight fraction.
- Protein and hydroxyproline
- Protein by Kjeldahl and hydroxyproline by colorimetric method or HPLC, which confirm collagen origin.
- Moisture and ash
- Loss on drying and ash; the powder is hygroscopic.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, coliforms, yeast and mold, and absence of Salmonella and E. coli.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store collagen tripeptide in sealed, moisture-proof packaging in a cool, dry place; it absorbs moisture quickly and can cake or turn sticky. Reseal opened bags immediately. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of moisture and micro for older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record tripeptide or Gly-Pro-Hyp content, molecular weight and the animal source for each lot. Keep species and origin documents with the lot for allergen, halal and kosher labeling.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
The EU Novel Food Catalogue entry for collagen concerns the use of hydrolysed collagen of animal origin in beverages and gives it the status not novel in food.
Source: ec.europa.eu (opens in a new tab)Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists hydrolyzed collagen, with common names including collagen hydrolysate and collagen peptides, as an extract under Schedule 1, item 2, with sources including fish scale and skin and porcine skin. The entry covers hydrolyzed collagen generally and does not name a tripeptide grade.

What forms of collagen tripeptide can brands buy?
Common forms include fish-derived, porcine-derived, standardized tripeptide content and agglomerated or granular. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for collagen tripeptide include?
Expect tripeptide and Gly-Pro-Hyp content, molecular weight distribution, protein and hydroxyproline, moisture and ash, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should collagen tripeptide be stored?
Store collagen tripeptide in sealed, moisture-proof packaging in a cool, dry place; it absorbs moisture quickly and can cake or turn sticky. Reseal opened bags immediately. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of moisture and micro for older stock.
