Citrus bergamot extract

Citrus bergamot extract suppliers and sourcing guide

Citrus bergamot extract is a polyphenol concentrate made from the fruit of the bergamot orange, Citrus bergamia, grown mainly in Calabria in southern Italy. The juice and inner peel left after essential oil recovery are filtered, passed over adsorbent resins to collect the flavonoids, and dried to a powder sold by total flavonoid content, with naringin, neohesperidin and neoeriocitrin reported by HPLC. It is a different product from bergamot essential oil, which comes from the peel.

Forms and grades of citrus bergamot extract

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Polyphenol fraction powder

Resin-purified juice and albedo extract sold with a minimum total flavonoid percentage by HPLC.

  • Juice powder

Dried bergamot juice with lower flavonoid content and more sugars and acids.

  • Branded extracts

Proprietary extracts with set flavonoid profiles and their own specifications.

  • Organic

Extract from certified organic fruit, offered by a few producers.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Flavonoid assay (HPLC)
Naringin, neohesperidin, neoeriocitrin and total flavanones by a named HPLC method; the method should be stated because totals differ by method.
Identity
HPLC fingerprint characteristic of bergamot, which distinguishes it from bitter orange or grapefruit extracts.
Furocoumarins
Bergapten and related compounds, which come from the peel and should be low in juice-based extracts.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue screen, since citrus is commonly sprayed.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed in lined, light-blocking containers in a cool, dry place; the powder is hygroscopic and cakes once exposed. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, and the flavonoid assay and moisture are repeated before using stock past its retest date.

Lots and expiry dates

Flavonoid content and profile vary with harvest year and fruit maturity, so record the HPLC assay and method for each lot and dose by actual assay. Confirm origin and whether the lot is juice- or peel-derived.
