Chaga mushroom

Chaga mushroom suppliers and sourcing guide

Chaga is Inonotus obliquus, a fungus that forms black, cracked sterile growths (sclerotia) on living birch trees in Russia, Finland, the Baltics, Canada and the northern US. Almost all supply is wild-harvested, broken into chunks, dried and milled. Brands buy chunks and powder for tea, hot-water or dual extracts specified by beta-glucans or polysaccharides, and mycelium grown on grain, which is a different material.

Forms and grades of chaga mushroom

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Chunks and tea cut

Dried, broken sclerotium for brewing; graded by size and the share of black outer crust versus orange interior.

  • Sclerotium powder

    Dried, milled sclerotium; not extracted.

  • Hot-water extract

Water extract dried to powder, sold on beta-glucans or polysaccharides.

  • Dual extract

Water and ethanol extracts combined, sometimes also specified by betulinic acid.

  • Mycelium on grain

Cultured mycelium grown on grain and dried with the substrate; starch-rich and not the same as wild sclerotium.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Beta-glucans (enzymatic)
Beta-glucans by an enzymatic method, with alpha-glucan reported to flag grain-grown material.
Identity
Microscopy, HPTLC or DNA barcoding to confirm Inonotus obliquus and sclerotium rather than mycelium on grain.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS; wild material reflects the harvest area.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella.
Oxalate content
Some buyers test oxalate in powders and extracts, since chaga is known to carry high levels.
Moisture and foreign matter
Loss on drying, plus wood and bark fragments in chunks and powder.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep chunks, powder and extract sealed, cool and dry. Extracts are hygroscopic and cake after opening, so reseal promptly. Shelf life or retest date comes from the supplier.

Lots and expiry dates

Wild harvest region, host tree and how much birch wood is included change each lot. Record harvest region, part (sclerotium or mycelium), extraction type and supplier lot.
