Carbamide peroxide
Carbamide peroxide suppliers and sourcing guide
Carbamide peroxide is a crystalline addition compound of urea and hydrogen peroxide in a 1:1 ratio, containing about 36% hydrogen peroxide by weight. It is made by crystallizing urea from concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution and drying the crystals at low temperature. Brands buy it as a white powder to make tooth whitening gels, often in anhydrous glycerin or glycol bases, and ear-care products.

Forms and grades of carbamide peroxide
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Crystalline powder
The standard form, sold by available hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide assay.
Pharmacopeial grade
Material made to a USP monograph, used where the finished product is a drug.
Pre-made gels
Carbamide peroxide already dispersed in an anhydrous gel base at a stated percentage, for brands without in-house mixing.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Assay
- Carbamide peroxide or available hydrogen peroxide by permanganate or iodometric titration.
- Urea content
- Urea by nitrogen determination or HPLC, confirming the 1:1 adduct.
- Water
- Water content, which speeds decomposition.
- Heavy metals
- Iron and other metals by ICP; trace metals speed peroxide breakdown.
- Appearance and solubility
- White crystals that dissolve clear in water; yellowing or residue suggests contamination.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store carbamide peroxide sealed, cool (many suppliers specify refrigerated storage) and dry, away from metals, organics and reducing agents, since it slowly loses active oxygen. Do not return unused powder to the original container. Shelf life is set by the supplier, and assay should be retested before using older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the actual peroxide assay for each lot and calculate batch weights from it, because potency drops with time and heat. Rotate strictly first in, first out and log storage temperature.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist covers urea (carbamide) peroxide under its peroxide and peroxide-generating compounds entry, which does not permit these compounds in products applied to the genital area and requires a study for oral cosmetics above 3% hydrogen peroxide or equivalent.
Source: canada.ca (opens in a new tab)21 CFR 310.534 states that OTC oral products of this type, including carbamide peroxide in anhydrous glycerin, are regarded as new drugs that need an approved application.

What forms of carbamide peroxide can brands buy?
Common forms include crystalline powder, pharmacopeial grade and pre-made gels. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for carbamide peroxide include?
Expect assay, urea content, water, heavy metals and appearance and solubility, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should carbamide peroxide be stored?
Store carbamide peroxide sealed, cool (many suppliers specify refrigerated storage) and dry, away from metals, organics and reducing agents, since it slowly loses active oxygen. Do not return unused powder to the original container. Shelf life is set by the supplier, and assay should be retested before using older stock.
