Camu camu
Camu camu suppliers and sourcing guide
Camu camu is Myrciaria dubia, a shrub in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) that grows along rivers in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. The sour red fruit is pulped, and the pulp or juice is freeze-dried or spray-dried into powder, often with a carrier such as maltodextrin. Brands mostly buy the powder for its naturally occurring vitamin C, which suppliers declare as a percentage on the specification.

Forms and grades of camu camu
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Freeze-dried fruit powder
Pulp or whole fruit dried under vacuum without a carrier. Keeps more of the native vitamin C and color, and costs more per kilogram.
Spray-dried juice powder
Juice concentrate dried with a carrier such as maltodextrin or gum arabic. Flows and disperses well, but the carrier lowers vitamin C per gram.
Vitamin C standardized powder
Powder sold with a minimum declared vitamin C level, often used as a natural source of vitamin C on labels.
Organic
Fruit from certified organic wild or cultivated stands, with the organic certificate tied to the lot.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Vitamin C assay (HPLC or titration)
- Ascorbic acid by HPLC or by 2,6-dichloroindophenol titration. The COA should name the method, because titration can read other reducing compounds.
- Identity
- Organoleptic checks plus HPTLC or HPLC fingerprint against a reference sample of Myrciaria dubia fruit.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella (often Staphylococcus aureus too).
- Physical tests
- Loss on drying, mesh or particle size, bulk density, color and odor against the spec. Note any carrier and its percentage.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep powder sealed in lined, light-proof containers in a cool, dry room. Vitamin C falls with heat, oxygen, moisture and light, and the powder is hygroscopic, so reseal opened bags promptly. Suppliers set a shelf life or retest date, and the vitamin C assay is usually repeated before material is used past it.
Lots and expiry dates
Vitamin C varies with ripeness at harvest, drying method and carrier level, so check each lot's assay against the label claim rather than using an average. Record supplier lot, carrier and retest date, and rotate stock first-expiry-first-out.
