Andrographis
Andrographis suppliers and sourcing guide
Andrographis is Andrographis paniculata, an annual herb in the acanthus family (Acanthaceae) cultivated in India, China and Southeast Asia. The aerial parts are harvested before or at flowering, dried, and sold as powder or extracted with water-alcohol and dried. Extracts are standardized to andrographolides, diterpene lactones measured by HPLC, commonly at 10 to 30 percent.

Standardized extract
Hydroalcoholic extract with a declared total andrographolides percentage by HPLC.
Cut herb
Dried aerial parts for teas and decoctions.
Organic
Herb from certified organic farms, with the certificate tied to the lot.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity (HPTLC)
- Fingerprint against Andrographis paniculata reference material.
- Andrographolide assay (HPLC)
- Andrographolide and related diterpene lactones by a named HPLC method.
- Residual solvents
- For extracts, results against USP <467> or the buyer's spec.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella (often Staphylococcus aureus too).
- Pesticide residues
- Multi-residue screen by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS, required for organic claims and commonly requested for conventional material.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store powder and extract sealed in lined drums, cool, dry and away from light. Extracts are hygroscopic and cake if left open. Suppliers set shelf life or retest dates and repeat the andrographolide assay at retest.
Lots and expiry dates
Andrographolide content depends on harvest stage, leaf-to-stem ratio and origin, so each lot needs its own assay. Record supplier lot, plant part and assay method, and rotate first-expiry-first-out.
