Macadamia nut oil

Macadamia nut oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Macadamia nut oil is pressed from the kernels of macadamia nuts (Macadamia integrifolia, M. tetraphylla and their hybrids), grown in Australia, South Africa, Kenya and Hawaii. It is usually expeller- or cold-pressed from kernels not sold as whole nuts, then filtered or refined. The oil is high in oleic acid and unusually high in palmitoleic acid. Brands buy virgin oil for foods and refined oil for cosmetics.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Fatty acid profile
Fatty acids by GC as methyl esters, including palmitoleic acid, which is characteristic of macadamia oil.
Free fatty acids and peroxide value
Free fatty acids (or acid value) by titration and peroxide value (for example AOCS Ca 5a-40 and Cd 8b-90); both rise as the oil ages or is handled poorly.
Color and flavor
Lovibond color and a flavor check, which separate virgin from refined oil.
Refining statement
A statement on whether the oil is highly refined, for allergen labeling decisions.
Microbiology
Total aerobic count and yeast and mold, often with specified organisms absent, mainly requested for cosmetic and topical use.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed in a cool, dark place; macadamia oil is fairly stable because it is low in polyunsaturated fat. Shelf life is set by the supplier specification, with peroxide value retested on aged stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record grade, origin and refining status for each lot. Flavor of virgin oil varies with kernel quality and roasting, so taste-check new lots for food use.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.
