Salmon oil

Salmon oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Salmon oil is the body oil of salmon, usually recovered from heads, frames and trimmings left after filleting, either from farmed Atlantic salmon or wild Pacific salmon. The raw material is cooked and pressed or enzymatically processed, and the oil is then sold crude or refined. Unrefined grades keep a natural orange-pink color from astaxanthin. Brands buy it in bulk for softgels, liquid oils and pet products.

Forms and grades of salmon oil

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Unrefined or virgin

Lightly processed oil that keeps natural color and some flavor, often sold for wild Alaskan salmon products.

  • Refined and deodorized

Oil that has been refined, bleached and deodorized for lower odor and contaminants.

  • Wild or farmed origin

Grades are sold by species and origin, such as wild Pacific or farmed Atlantic, which changes the fatty acid profile.

  • Softgel grade

Bulk oil supplied with added tocopherols for encapsulation.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

EPA and DHA
Fatty acid profile by GC as methyl esters, reported in mg/g.
Peroxide, anisidine and TOTOX
Peroxide value (AOCS Cd 8b-90 or a pharmacopeial method) for primary oxidation and p-anisidine value for secondary oxidation, combined as TOTOX (2 x PV + AV).
Dioxins, PCBs and metals
Dioxins, furans and dioxin-like PCBs by GC-HRMS, plus lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic by ICP-MS; these are the standard contaminant panel for marine oils.
Species identity
Supplier documentation of species and origin; DNA testing of the raw material is sometimes used for wild-caught claims.
Moisture and impurities
Moisture and insoluble impurities, especially for unrefined grades.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed under nitrogen, away from light, in a cool place; refrigerate after opening. Unrefined oil oxidizes faster than refined oil and should be used sooner. Shelf life is set by the supplier specification, with peroxide and anisidine values retested on aged stock.

Lots and expiry dates

EPA and DHA content and color vary by species, season and farmed or wild origin, so record the actual assay for each lot. Keep origin and species documentation with each lot if the label names them.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.
