Borage oil

Borage oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Borage oil is extracted from the seeds of borage (Borago officinalis), a plant also called starflower. It is produced by pressing or solvent extraction and then refined. It is one of the richest plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), with higher GLA than evening primrose oil. Brands buy it as refined oil for softgels and blends, sold at a stated GLA level.

Forms and grades of borage oil

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Refined oil

Refined and deodorized oil sold with a minimum GLA content.

  • Cold-pressed

Mechanically pressed oil with less processing.

  • Organic

Oil from certified organic borage seed, in smaller supply.

  • Blends

Borage oil combined with fish or flaxseed oil in multi-oil softgels.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

GLA and fatty acid profile
GLA, linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids by GC as methyl esters.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids
Buyers commonly ask for pyrrolizidine alkaloid testing by LC-MS/MS, since the borage plant contains these compounds; refined seed oil should be below the stated limit.
Free fatty acids and peroxide value
Free fatty acids (as oleic acid) by titration (AOCS Ca 5a-40) and peroxide value (AOCS Cd 8b-90); both rise as the oil ages or is handled poorly.
Residual solvents
Hexane by headspace GC for solvent-extracted grades.
Heavy metals
Lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury by ICP-MS, reported against the supplier specification.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed in airtight containers, protected from light, in a cool place. Shelf life follows the supplier specification, with peroxide value retested before using older stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record GLA content and the pyrrolizidine alkaloid result for each lot. GLA varies with seed crop, so recheck label calculations when switching lots.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of borage oil can brands buy?

Common forms include refined oil, cold-pressed, organic and blends. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for borage oil include?

Expect gLA and fatty acid profile, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, free fatty acids and peroxide value, residual solvents and heavy metals, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should borage oil be stored?

Store sealed in airtight containers, protected from light, in a cool place. Shelf life follows the supplier specification, with peroxide value retested before using older stock.

What is the regulatory status of borage oil?

Health Canada's borage oil monograph lists the seed of Borago officinalis as the source material. The monograph allows products standardized to 18-27% GLA.
