Canola oil
Canola oil suppliers and sourcing guide
Canola oil is pressed and solvent extracted from the seeds of rapeseed varieties (mainly Brassica napus and Brassica rapa) bred for low erucic acid. The crude oil is degummed, refined, bleached and deodorized. It is a neutral liquid oil used for frying, baking, dressings, and as a carrier oil in supplements. High-oleic canola is sold for applications that need more heat stability.

Forms and grades of canola oil
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
RBD canola oil
Refined, bleached and deodorized oil, the standard grade.
High-oleic canola
Oil from varieties with raised oleic acid for frying and longer shelf life.
Expeller-pressed
Mechanically pressed oil made without hexane, then refined.
Non-GMO and organic
Identity-preserved non-GMO or certified organic oil, since much North American canola is genetically engineered.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Erucic acid and fatty acid profile
- Erucic acid and full fatty acid profile by GC as methyl esters.
- Free fatty acids and peroxide value
- Free fatty acids (as oleic acid) by titration (AOCS Ca 5a-40) and peroxide value (AOCS Cd 8b-90); both rise as the oil ages or is handled poorly.
- Color and chlorophyll
- Lovibond color and residual chlorophyll, which affect stability and appearance.
- Residual solvents
- Hexane by headspace GC for solvent-extracted grades.
- Non-GMO documentation
- Identity-preservation certificates for non-GMO lots, since refined oil carries little DNA to test.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store sealed, away from heat and light. Shelf life follows the supplier specification, with peroxide value retested on aged stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the grade, erucic acid result and non-GMO or organic documentation for each lot. Fatty acid profile varies slightly with crop and variety.
Regulatory status
