Ahiflower oil
Ahiflower oil suppliers and sourcing guide
Ahiflower is a trade name for the oil pressed from the seeds of Buglossoides arvensis (corn gromwell), a plant in the borage family grown under contract, mainly in the United Kingdom. The seed is cold-pressed and the oil is refined. It contains stearidonic acid (SDA) together with alpha-linolenic and gamma-linolenic acids, which sets it apart from flax and borage oils. Brands buy it as bulk oil for softgels and liquids, or as a powder.

What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Fatty acid profile
- SDA, ALA, GLA and linoleic acid by GC of methyl esters, the main identity and potency check.
- Peroxide, anisidine and TOTOX
- Peroxide and p-anisidine values and the calculated TOTOX value, since the oil is highly unsaturated.
- Acid value
- Acid value by titration.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic by ICP-MS.
- Pyrrolizidine alkaloids
- Some buyers ask for pyrrolizidine alkaloid testing by LC-MS/MS because the plant belongs to the borage family.
