What to require from bottle and jar suppliers

Food-contact compliance in writing

For anything you eat, drink or swallow, ask for a letter stating the resin or glass meets FDA food-contact rules (21 CFR 174–178). Keep it with your supplier file; retailers and auditors ask for it.

A spec drawing for every item

Capacity, height, diameter, weight, neck finish and label panel size. Your filler, your labels and your closures are all set up from it, so get it before you order labels.

Tested with your product

Oils, essential oils, alcohol and acids can stress-crack or soften some plastics, and light breaks down many actives. Run a fill-and-hold test, and use amber or opaque containers where light matters.

Lot numbers on every case

Each case or pallet should carry the supplier’s lot number. If a batch of bottles is defective, the lot number tells you which finished goods it went into.

Stock depth and lead times

Stock items can sell out or be discontinued. Ask how much is held in the US, the lead time when it runs out, and whether an equivalent exists, before you design around it.

Clear terms on custom molds

A custom shape needs a mold. Get the tooling cost, who owns the mold, where it is kept, sample timing and the minimum run in writing.

What is the neck finish, and which closures do you sell that fit it?
Can you send a spec drawing and the food-contact compliance letter for this item?
Is each case marked with a lot number, and do you send a certificate of conformance?

If the item is discontinued, how much notice do you give?
For a custom mold: what does tooling cost, who owns it, and how long until samples?
Can you ship to my co-manufacturer directly, and how is it packed for their line?

Frequently asked questions

Should I start with stock or custom bottles?

Most brands start with stock. Stock bottles ship in days, sell by the case, and have closures that are known to fit. A custom mold makes sense once volume is steady and the shape is part of the brand, because tooling and minimum runs tie up cash.

What does a neck finish like 38-400 mean?

The first number is the outside diameter of the threads in millimeters. The second is the thread style and height. A cap fits only a bottle with the same finish, so match both numbers when you buy closures from a different supplier.

PET, HDPE or glass?

PET is clear and light and is common for supplements and beverages. HDPE is opaque, tough and resists many chemicals. Glass is inert and reads as premium but is heavy and breaks. Test your product in the material before you commit.

Do I need to keep records on my bottles?

Keep the spec drawing, the food-contact letter, and the lot numbers you received. If a container fails, you need to find every finished lot it went into, so record component lots on receipt and link them to each batch.
