Resistant dextrin
Resistant dextrin suppliers and sourcing guide
Resistant dextrin is a soluble fiber made from corn, tapioca or wheat starch. The starch is heated with a small amount of acid (dextrinization), which rearranges the glucose links so that much of the product resists digestion; it is then often treated with enzymes, refined, decolorized and sometimes passed through chromatography to raise the fiber content. It is sold as a white powder or clear syrup that dissolves easily and adds little flavor or viscosity.

Forms and grades of resistant dextrin
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Powder
Spray-dried white powder, typically 85% or more fiber on a dry basis; used in drink mixes, bars and capsules.
Syrup
Liquid form used in bars, confections and beverages to replace corn syrup.
Corn, tapioca or wheat source
Same process, different starch; tapioca grades are chosen for corn-free labels and wheat grades must be declared for allergen labeling.
Non-GMO and organic
Non-GMO corn or tapioca sources, and organic grades made from organic starch where available.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Dietary fiber content
- Total dietary fiber by AOAC 2001.03 or 2009.01, which capture low-molecular-weight soluble fiber; reported on a dry basis.
- Sugars (DP1-DP2)
- Glucose, maltose and other mono- and disaccharides by HPLC, which affect the sugars line on the label.
- Moisture or dry solids
- Loss on drying for powder, or dry solids for syrup.
- Color, pH and ash
- Solution color, pH and ash to confirm refining.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or Enterobacteriaceae, E. coli and Salmonella.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Powder is hygroscopic, so keep it in sealed, moisture-barrier bags in a cool, dry place and re-seal after use. Syrups are kept in closed totes or drums at room temperature and can darken with heat over time. Suppliers set a best-before date for unopened packaging.
Lots and expiry dates
Fiber content can differ between suppliers because of process and test method, so confirm the AOAC method and fiber percentage on each COA before calculating label grams. Record the starch source (corn, tapioca or wheat) for allergen and non-GMO paperwork.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
FDA lists resistant maltodextrin/dextrin among the non-digestible carbohydrates it intends to propose adding to its dietary fiber definition, and until that rulemaking it intends to allow them in the dietary fiber declaration.

What forms of resistant dextrin can brands buy?
Common forms include powder, syrup, corn, tapioca or wheat source and non-GMO and organic. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for resistant dextrin include?
Expect dietary fiber content, sugars (DP1-DP2), moisture or dry solids, color, pH and ash and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should resistant dextrin be stored?
Powder is hygroscopic, so keep it in sealed, moisture-barrier bags in a cool, dry place and re-seal after use. Syrups are kept in closed totes or drums at room temperature and can darken with heat over time. Suppliers set a best-before date for unopened packaging.
