Eucalyptus oil
Eucalyptus oil suppliers and sourcing guide
Eucalyptus oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of eucalyptus trees, mainly Eucalyptus globulus, with China, Spain, Portugal and Australia as key producers. Crude oil is rectified to raise 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) content and remove harsh components, and is sold by cineole grade. It is used in cough drops, oral care, cosmetics and household products, and at low levels in food flavors. Lemon-scented eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) oil is a different, citronellal-rich product.

Forms and grades of eucalyptus oil
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Rectified, 70 to 75 percent cineole
A common commercial grade for oral care and general use.
Rectified, 80 to 85 percent cineole
Higher-cineole grade for lozenges and pharmaceutical-type products.
Crude
Once-distilled oil with lower cineole and stronger off-notes, used in technical applications.
Organic
Certified organic eucalyptus oil, in limited supply.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- GC profile
- Gas chromatography of 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene, limonene, p-cymene and aldehydes, against the specification for the stated grade.
- Physical constants
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation at a stated temperature, compared with the supplier's specification or the Food Chemicals Codex monograph where one exists.
- 1,8-Cineole assay
- Cineole content by GC (or by the classic o-cresol freezing-point method), which defines the grade.
- Appearance and odor
- Color, clarity and odor against a retained standard; off-notes often show up before the GC profile shifts.
- Heavy metals
- Lead and arsenic, typically by ICP-MS, against the supplier's specification.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep the oil in full, tightly closed amber glass, aluminum or lined steel containers, cool and out of light; headspace air oxidizes terpenes and dulls the odor. Blanket partly used drums with nitrogen where possible. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, and older stock is usually retested for odor, peroxide value and GC profile before use.
Lots and expiry dates
Cineole content and minor components vary with species, origin and rectification. Record species, grade and cineole result per lot, and confirm the botanical source when a supplier offers several eucalyptus oils.
