Coco-caprylate

Coco-caprylate suppliers and sourcing guide

Coco-caprylate is an ester of coconut-derived fatty alcohols (mainly C12 to C18) with caprylic acid (C8), a clear, light, low-viscosity oil. It is made by esterifying coconut fatty alcohols with caprylic acid, also from coconut or palm kernel oil, then refining and deodorizing. Cosmetic brands buy it as a light, fast-spreading emollient, often in natural-positioned products as an alternative to silicone fluids.

Forms and grades of coco-caprylate

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Coco-caprylate

Ester of coconut alcohols with caprylic acid alone, the lightest-feeling grade.

  • Coco-caprylate/caprate

A related ester made with both caprylic and capric acids, slightly richer in feel and listed under its own INCI name.

  • COSMOS / natural-origin grades

Grades with COSMOS approval or an ISO 16128 natural-origin index for natural or organic product lines.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Ester composition
GC profile of the ester and residual alcohols and acids.
Acid and saponification values
Titrations showing free fatty acid and ester content.
Peroxide value
Titration showing early oxidation.
Color, odor and refractive index
APHA color, odor check and refractive index for identity.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic and other elements by ICP-MS or ICP-OES against the supplier's specification or the applicable USP, FCC or cosmetic-grade limit.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store coco-caprylate sealed at room temperature, away from light, heat and moisture. Nitrogen headspace helps for partly used bulk containers. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with a retest of acid and peroxide values for older stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record acid value, peroxide value and feedstock certification for each lot. Confirm whether the lot is coco-caprylate or coco-caprylate/caprate, since the INCI names and feel differ.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

  • Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists coco-caprylate as an approved ingredient with the non-medicinal purpose skin-conditioning agent (emollient), for topical use only.
