Advantame
Advantame suppliers and sourcing guide
Advantame is a high-intensity sweetener chemically related to aspartame, made by joining aspartame with a compound derived from isovanillin and then purifying and crystallizing the product as a monohydrate. It was developed by Ajinomoto, whose specification document is referenced in the FDA regulation. FDA describes it as about 20,000 times sweeter than table sugar, so it is used in trace amounts and usually bought diluted on a carrier or in a blend.

Forms and grades of advantame
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Neat powder
Pure advantame monohydrate for manufacturers who can micro-dose or make their own dilutions.
Carrier dilutions
Advantame spread on a bulking agent such as maltodextrin at a stated ratio for practical weighing.
Liquid solutions
Advantame dissolved at a stated concentration for dosing into beverages and syrups.
Sweetener blends
Advantame combined with other sweeteners to adjust sweetness timing and profile.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Assay
- Advantame content on a dry basis by HPLC; 21 CFR 172.803 sets 97.0 to 102.0 percent.
- Free acid and related substances
- The de-esterified advantame acid (max 1.0 percent) and total other related substances (max 1.5 percent) by HPLC.
- Water
- Water content, typically by Karl Fischer; advantame is a monohydrate and the regulation sets a 5.0 percent maximum.
- Lead
- Lead by ICP-MS or atomic absorption against the 1.0 mg/kg maximum in 21 CFR 172.803.
- Specific rotation and residue on ignition
- Optical rotation as an identity and purity check, plus residue on ignition (max 0.2 percent).
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store advantame sealed in a cool, dry place protected from light. Dilutions on carriers should be kept closed and mixed before sampling so the active stays evenly spread. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of assay and related substances to extend it.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the actual advantame concentration of any dilution and the assay for each lot, because at these use levels small differences change sweetness. Keep the related-substance results on file to watch for degradation in older stock.
Regulatory status

What forms of advantame can brands buy?
Common forms include neat powder, carrier dilutions, liquid solutions and sweetener blends. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for advantame include?
Expect assay, free acid and related substances, water, lead and specific rotation and residue on ignition, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should advantame be stored?
Store advantame sealed in a cool, dry place protected from light. Dilutions on carriers should be kept closed and mixed before sampling so the active stays evenly spread. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of assay and related substances to extend it.
